As Music Director of the Chapel Hill Philharmonia since 1993, conductor Donald L. Oehler continually strengthens the Triangle artistic community through his collaborative spirit and appealing personality. He proudly joins the musicians of the orchestra with a passion for rehearsing and performing the best of the standard orchestra repertoire, exploring and presenting works of the 20th and 21st centuries and collaborating with soloists of the highest caliber. Together they have doubled the number of yearly concerts, performed with numerous outstanding soloists, and presented three world premieres. The May 6, 2018 concert marks Mr. Oehler’s 65th appearance with the orchestra.

Mr. Oehler’s performance career as a clarinet soloist and chamber musician has taken him throughout the United States, Central America, Canada, Great Britain, Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. He has been a member of numerous chamber ensembles including over 35 years with the Carolina Wind Quintet. He has been a guest artist with string quartets in regional, national, and international performances, and has collaborated in just about every variation of chamber ensemble settings. He was principal clarinet with the North Carolina Opera and has recorded with the BRT I, BRT III, the CBC and on the Centaur Label.

As a faculty guest artist, Donald L. Oehler has participated in teaching, coaching and conducting in international, national and regional festivals, chamber music courses and workshops. He was founder and artistic director of the University Chamber Players, the Chapel Hill Chamber Music Workshop, and the Corso Internazionale di Music da Camera in Tuscania, Italy. He served on the faculty of the Cours International de Musique in Morges, Switzerland for 16 years and was director of winds for MusicFest International in Aberystwyth, Wales, a festival to which he will return in the summer of 2018 to present master classes in the clarinet quintet genre.

As a Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Mr. Oehler leads a clarinet studio, coaches chamber music, advocates for undergraduate research, and is resident director of the Burch Honors Seminar in Music held in London and Florence, Italy.

Born in Wisconsin, Mr. Oehler graduated from the Juilliard School of Music and began his career as principal clarinetist of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Teheran in Teheran, Iran.
